If your child is like Riley, they have been sitting for a few months now and have good balance while doing so. They are able to reach for toys in a seated position without toppling over. They know how to get on to their bellies from a seated position if they want too. However, they aren’t quite sure how to get back to that seated position.
Instead of just picking your child back up and putting them in the seated position, help guide them back to the position. To do this, roll your baby onto their side and place one hand under their shoulder and the other on the opposite hip.
Gently ease them into a sitting position. I find that it is important that Riley uses her hand to help push against the floor as she moves back into the sitting position.
This will help Riley to start using this movement to push herself into the sitting position independently.
This skill not only helps Riley continue to become more independent, but it is also working her gross motor development.
